Under the electric stars of Paris’s Red Windmill, a poet (Ewan McGregor) and a courtesan (Nicole Kidman) fall in love.
“In this movie there are more volatile or seductive shades of red than even Toulouse-Lautrec might have dreamed of. Few films since the gorgeous dreamscapes of the old Technicolor process, in which the dye was printed right on the stock, have cajoled as much out of a single color as Mr. Luhrmann has out of red in Moulin Rouge.” – Elvis Mitchell, New York Times
The exhibition Starstruck: Australian Movie Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery Nov 11 2017 to March 12 2018, features the red satin dress worn by Nicole Kidman during the production of Moulin Rouge, as well as a production image of Kidman in character as ‘Satine’, as well as a range of continuity polaroid images used to ensure a performer’s hair and costume look the same in the one scene despite a scene being possibly shot over multiple days.
