Sweet & Lowdown
Fri 11 May @ 7pm | Arc Cinema | $15/13
1999 | PG | 95 mins | USA | D: Woody Allen
This charming and soulful love letter to jazz is one of Allen’s best. Emmett Ray (Sean Penn) is a little known jazz guitarist in the 1930s, second to none, except his idol, Django Reinhardt. A film that moves with the same sweet and unexpected rhythms of the music his gloriously flawed hero lives and breathes. NFSA 35mm print. Preceded by ‘Sky Scraper’, Shirley Clarke’s impressionistic, jazz-infused documentary about the construction of the Tishman Building in New York (1960, 20m). NFSA 16mm.
