Teenage farmhand Caleb, smitten by pale young drifter Mae, ends up trapped by her strange surrogate family, who turn out to be a wandering clan of vampires. As Caleb's father and younger sister try to track him down, Caleb attempts to save himself and Mae from the pack.
Writer-director Kathryn Bigelow's breakout feature is an atmospheric nightmare, blending cutting-edge cult horro, gothic romance and elements of the Western. Not immediately successful at the box office, the film has gone on to garner cult status as one of the best vampire films ever made.
'Bigelow's artful handling of the magic and menace of the night is hauntingly apparent' - Rolling Stone
'High-powered but pared down, slick but spare, this is a tale that introduces the unearthly into the banality of rural American existence' - Variety
