American icon James Dean received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his angst-ridden portrayal of Cal Trask. Based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel of the same name, which draws upon the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, East of Eden explores the competing and complex relationships between a young man (Dean), his deeply religious father and his older brother. Of the three major films completed before his death in late 1955 (East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956)) East of Eden was the only film of Dean’s that he was able to personally view in its entirety.
