Cary Scott (Jane Wyman) is a well-to-do widow gradually re-entering a social life amongst her mostly dull country club peers. When she meets Ron (Rock Hudson), a handsome younger man who owns a small landscaping business, a romance between the two quickly develops. But their affair causes clashes and tensions between Cary, her children and the country club, and the two are faced with heart-wrenching decisions.
This gorgeous Technicolor film and its story of forbidden desires comes from the master of melodrama, Douglas Sirk. It later inspired new takes on the narrative in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) and Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven (2002).
‘A masterpiece by one of the most inventive and recondite directors ever to work in Hollywood, Douglas Sirk’ – Chicago Reader
