François (Jean-Claude Drouot) is a happily married man living a comfortable life with his wife Thérèse (Claire Drouot) and their two beautiful children. The family enjoy outings in the woods and spending time together.
Although finding abundant happiness in his life and indisputably loving his wife and children, François falls for Émilie (Marie-France Boyer), an attractive single woman he meets at the post office.
From the ‘grandmother of the French New Wave’, Le Bonheur is beautiful and disturbing, straightforward and deeply subversive.
‘Varda fills her frames with riots of nature and colour, like Bonnard paintings come to life, and with an erotic intimacy to match, choreographing physical passion with unabashed but formally controlled delight’ – The New Yorker
